NOVEL LIFE-SAYING SUIT. A German engineer has invented a very peculiar life-saving device. It consists of a water-tight canvas suit in the shape of a bag. with sleeves for the arms and a dome-shaped top that closes over the wearer's head. The sleeves terminate in gloves, so that no water can enter the suit through them. The top is provided with a porthole, through which the wearer may take note of his surroundings. However, a slide is provided to seal the porthole hermetically. Projecting from the top of the suit is a pipe through which air is admitted. In order to keep the device upright, a metal can or bucket is fastened to the bottom of the suit. Thera are openings in the top of the bucket, so that it will fill with water and act as a weight. Within the suit a limited stock of provisions may be carried. Around the top hand-ropes are secured, to which two or three persona may climr and keep themselves afloat. The ovnpant of the lifesaving device can propel himself by using his arms as paddles.

July 24. At the Harbor Board meeting to-night the beard adopted a schedule of works to be carried out within 18 months and estimated to cost £95,500. Mr F. F. Munro, who has now taken up residence in Wellington, but still has occasion to visit Westport, resigned the chairmanship, but retained his membership of the board. Mr J. H. Greenwood, deputy chairman, was elected chairman, and Mr H. Gillan deputy chairman. THE EMPRESS OF IRELAND'S SUCCESSOR. It is announced in the latest time-tablo issued by the Canadian Pacific Railwav Company that the steamer Virginian, of 12,000 tons gross, of the Allan Line, has been chartered for the Montreal-Liverpool passenger service in place of the ill-fated steamer Empress of Ireland. A MODERN CARGO STEAMER. THE STAR OF ENGLAND ARRIVES. An interesting arrival at Wellington on Thursday, on her maiden journey from London."was the new C. and D. liner Star of England. She was built by Messrs Workman, Clark, and Co., at Belfast, last year. The Star of England, which is similar in appearance to the Star of Victoria and other later vessels of that line which have visited New Zealand ports on various occasions, attracted considerable attention at the Wellington waterfront. She can show a fast turn of speed, and accomplished the journey (1.281 miles) from Sydney to Auckland in a little over four davs.

The new vessel, which is 516 ft in length, with a gross tonnage of 9,150, has been built under special survey for the highest class in Lloyd's Registry and co the Board of Trade requirements for a first-class passenger and cargo steamer. Comfortable accommodation for a number of saloon passengers is provided in large and weilfurnished state rooms. The dining saloon is tastefully decorated, and furnished in oak. These rooms are all well lighted and ventilated. The upper 'tween-deck spaces have been so arranged that they can be readily prepared for the accommodation of about" 200 third class passengers in large rooms suitably furnished. The lifeboat accommodation is in excess of the Board of Trade requirements, and the boats, being placed under Welin'davits, can be readily put out and lowered, even under adverse weather conditions. The vessel is also provided with an installation of wireless telegraphy and submarine signalling. The cargo space is divided into six holds, four of which are insulated and prepared for carrying chilled and frozen meat cargoes. In addition to this there are insulated chambers for the carriage of perishable stores and dairy produce. The vessel is propelled by two independent sets of tripleexpansion "engines, supplied with steam from three steel cylindrical boilers, working under forced draught. Captain Ulyatt is in command.
