The Duiidas Street Literary and Debating Society held their weekly meeting on Friday evening, the subject being a ' Question Box.’ each member submitting a written question. All the papers were then collected, each member drawing one on which he would require to speak, niter which it was discussed by the members. The subjects were chiefly of. national and local interest, those arousing most Jisctistion dealing with the Bible-in-schools movement and "Is the British race degenerating ?’* The Rev. T. A. Pybus was in the chair, and summed up the questions In a very able manner. The South Dunedin Presbyterian Literary and Gymnastic Club held their monthly literary meeting last night. The Rev. R. Fairmaid opened the proceedings and introduced Mr D. M. Sutherland, who gave an instructive and interesting address on ‘The Art of Public Speaking.' Thereafter two or three popular topics were debated. One of these, ‘Should Women be Required to Undertake Compulsory Military Training,’ gave rise to a spirited discussion, in which both the

r.flh-iuative and negative sides were well thrashed out, and revealed good debating power among the young men. Messrs Mercer. Ritchie, Bochanan, Thomas, Butcher. Jowsey, and Workman took part. At the dose a hearty vote of thanks was recorded to Mr Sutherland, who in re-n-ying complimented the young speakers ;m the success o? their maiden efforts.
