MOSGIEL BOROUGH COUNCIL

Last night’s meeting of the council was attended by the Mayor (Mr A. F. Quelch) and Crs Aitken, Muirhead, Leith, Brown, Cheyne. Seaton, M'Leod, and Williams. Or Callander was absent through, illness.

The District Engineer of Railways acknowledged receipt of the council’s letter of the 28th ult. with reference to the Gordon road crossing, and stating that the representations made would be given due consideration. —Received. The Minister of Railways notified that tho council’s application for an overbridge would receive consideration. —Received. The Assistant Under-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs inquired if the council had appointed an inspector of buildings, as provided by section 30 of the Municipal Corporations Amendment Act, 1915, and whether they had made regulations under section 345 (i) of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1908, as amended by section 46 (a) of the amendment Act, Üb--The clerk was instructed to forward the necessary information. The Clerk of the Bruce County Council wrote suggesting a conference of surrounding local bodies to discuss the best means of deriving and apportioning revenue from owners of motor vehicles. —The Mayor was appointed a delegate to represent. the council should a conference eventuate. The Works Committee -reported that owing to so much wet weather the surfacemen had spent a good part of their time in scraping streets and crossings for loot traffic. The committee recommended that the footpath be formed from Gordon road when funds were available, provided that the owners of properties adjoining agreed to pay half-cost. As to Miss Mackie « application for a light at the corner ot Clyde and Forfar streets, the committee considered that the place was as well lighted as any other beyond the mam streets.— Adopted. . , , The Finance Committee reported thn, tho receipts since last report were £lB6 14s Id. , The Finance Committee were empowered to issue a- cheque for some renewal parts of machinery for the septic tank, w arch was being procured from England, and would arrive in a few days. Cr M'Lood asked a question regarding valuations.—The Mayor explained that he had an assurance from the department that a revaluation of the boroueh would be made about September. This would allow obiectore a chance to bring their claims bet or© tho Assessment Court, and havo matteis adjusted in plenty of time to haw the valuation completed before March 01. At the- close of the ordinary business the council considered in committee several matters, including the plaits for tho proposed Owhiro bridge, for which a grant of £2OO was promised by the Government.
