Mr Arthur Morton Grenfield, who lately -withdrew from the directorate of the company, was concerned recently in a Canadian speculation, involving £5,000,000, -which caused a sensation on the London Stock Exchange. He is also a director in many Canadian companies. The firm's capital is £1350,000 and the current deposit account with the company about lj millions. It is understood that the firm are solvent, and merely require time. THE MARKETS.

Australian—Mutton, light 3|d, heavy 32d, ewes 3gd; lamb, fair quality 5 *ll-16d, inferior sgd,. River Plate—Mutton, heavy (56-721b) 3|d, ewes 3Jd; lamb, first quality s|d. second quality s£d; beef, chilled fores 3£d, hinds s|d; frozen fores 3 7-16 d, hinds 4|d. Wheat: Prices are firm and fair j 37s 6d is asked, and 37s 3d offered for shipments. The total quantity afloat for the United Kingdom is 3,066.000 quarters, and for the Continent 2,415,000 quarters. The Atlantic shipments were 373,000 quarters, and the Pacific nil. Totals :—Europe, 1.520,000 quarters; Australasia, 206,000 quarters. Hemp : Dull; high point fair, June and August shipment, £24 7s 6d. Rubber : Para, 2s Bsd to 2s lOd; plantation and smoked, 2s 4id.

Cotton : June and July, 7.16£ d. Copra : Weak; South Sea bags, £24 5s to £24 10s.

GRAIN AND PRODUCE. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report as follows: —We held our weekly auction sale of grain and produce at our stores to-day, when values ruled as under:— Oats. —The market remains quiet. There lias been moro inquiry for seed varieties during the past week, but littl* business has been passing in other lines, and values remain unaltered. Wheat.—Offerings of milling wheal'(faring the past week have been light. The market remains firm, and any lines avai'abl» are readily taken at quotations. Fowl wheat is in short eupply, and meets a read sale on arrival. We quote: Prime milling velvet, to 4s 3d; velvet ear and red chaff, 4s Id to 4s 2d; Tuscan, 4s to 4s Id ; medium milling, 3s lid to 4s; best whole fowl wheat. 3s lOd to 3s lid; broken and damaged, from 3s 6d per bushel (sacks extra). Potatoes.—The bulk of the consignments of late have been coming from northern districts. The bulk of the supplies are of medium quality, and are not meeting with favor from buyers, who are showing a preference for southern-grown potatoes, which are arriving in sounder condition, and these are worth up to £5 per ton for extrachoice samples; medium to good, £4 to £4 10b. Northern potatoes are selling at from £3 to £4 per ton, according to qualitv and condition.

"Chaff.—Moderate supplies have been coming forward. The demand is restricted to choice quality, which is not offering so freelv. Medium and discolored chaff, of which, there are largo stocks in stores, is not meeting with the same demand, and sales are more difficult to effect. We quote: Choice black oaten sheaf, £3 10s to £3 12s 6d; best white oaten sheaf. £3 2s 6d to £3 7s 6d; medium, £2 10s to £3 per ton (sacks extra).

Potatoes.—Consignments are not coming forward so freely, but stocks in stores are fairly heavy, and in the absence of anv export demand sales are on a small scale. Good table potatoes are offering freely at £4 to £4 10s, but choice freshlypicked lots, which are in most favor with consumers, are worth £4 15s to £5. Inferior to medium qualities are plentiful, and difficult to place at £3 to £3 15s per ton (sacks included). 'Chaff.—The market is fully supplied with medium and inferior lines, which move off slowly. Prime oaten sheaf is soarce, and commands ready sale at quotations. Lines of choice black oat are in demand at £3 10s to £3 12s 6d j best white oat, £5 5s to £3 Iftj; medium to good, £3 to £3 2s 6d; light and discolored, £2 10s to £2 15s per ton (bags extra).

THE HOME MARKETS. HIGH COMMLSSIO»ER.'S REPORT. WEITINGTON, June 8. The High Commissioner cabled from London on Hie 6th inst. (note, the quotations, unless otherwise specified, are the average market prices on spot); Mutton. —Good demand continues and prices are firm, especially for light-weights. Canterbury, 4fd for light-weights; 'heavyweights, s|d; North Island, 4gd for best quality light-weights. Lamb. —Market quiat but steady. There is lees demand on account of the large supply of inferiox quality English lamb. Canterbury twos, 6 5-l6d f<>r first-class quality to as high as 6|d. Beef.—Less demand owing to supplies of American chilled beef being large. New Zealand hinds, 4 7-16 d; fore*, 3 7-16 d; chilled hinds, s|d; fores, sjd. Butter. —No alteration. Butter (has come on the market since laet week. Danish, quiet, 114s to 116s; New Zealand, market quiet, but steady, 108s to 110s; Australian, 100s to 104s;" Siberian, market quiet, bat steady, 98s to 102s; Irish creamery, elow, 104s to 108s. Cheese. —Market firmer. Old Canadian, firm market, 68s to 70s; new, in good demand, 61s to 625; New Zealand, g>ocd demand, white, 62s to_ 655; colored, 64s to 655. The estimated Canadian oheeso stocks on June 2 at London, Bristol, and Liverpool were 33,000 against 67,000 at the same time last year. The New Zealand and Australian stocks in London and Bristol were 37,000 crates, against 34,000 last year. Hemp.—Market quiet and email business doing. Prices have declined. Manila, fair current, £26; June- to August shipments, 5s more. The output from Manila for the week was 21,000 bales. New Zealand, good fair, £26; fair, £23j June to August shipments, 5s more in each case. The stock of New Zealand hemp at the end •of May wae 971 tons. The; sisal market is reported easier. New York quotations are equal to £25 per ton, c.i.f., Europe The stocks at the beginning of May were 40,957 bales, against 127,009 last year. Kauri Gum.—Market firm; little doing. Prices are nominally unchanged. Fifty packages were offered, mostly low grade, but none were eedd.

Hops.—Market quiet, and prices fairly steady. English, 115s to 135s 5 Continental, 95a to 100s; Californian, 75s to 100s.
