TUG-OF-WAR

The second of the series of contests that ire exciting a lot of interest, and which promise to be all the rage before the week is over, was held in the Garrison Hall last evening. The attendance was large, and i the arrangements were satisfactory. _ The audience were supplied with full irtiorma- I tion regarding the -competing teams, and j the excitement was intense as the rope swaved this way and that —first on one side", then on the other—as the teams put forth special efforts. | The first round of the A section was con- ] tinned. New blood was introduced in the j presence of teams representing Hoffman Bros., Telegraph Linesmen No. 1, Horni- | brook's Physical Culture (Christchurch), Inch Valley, Enfield, and Invercargill Sail- ■ ing Boat Club. The B section was continued, Speight's I No. 1 meeting Cement Works, Watersiders. No. 2 meeting Hanley (Gore), Stevenson and Cook No. 2 meeting Telegraph No. 2, and Auckland Police meeting Beban's West Coast team. Agreeable variety was provided by the elocutionary items of Mr W. W. Crawford -v.d the contributions of the Kaikorai Band. The pull between Hoffman Bros, and Telegraph Linesmen No. 1 was a close rontest. The issue was in doubt till the hst few seconds, when Hoffmans had a half-inch or so to their credit. They maintained this advantage. Hornibrook's v. Inch Valley was the for■ner's from the start. They got the mark :heir way from the start (just a fraction), and, keeping up a steady strain, resisted til efforts. They gained rather than lost anything. The winners are a scientific •earn. Enfield were decided winners against In*ercargill Sailing Boat Club, Beginning v.ith the mark just their side, they wound up with over a foot to spare. Springhills had a bye. The B section was then proceeded with. The first contestants were Speight's No. 1 v. Cement Works. Speight's, at pistol fire, hauled the white mark an inch in their favor, and though the Cement men did their utmost they could not get back what they lost at the start. Watersiders No. 2 next met the Gore team iHanley*s), and, after obtaining the sirivantage at the start, never lost it. meeting their opponents' final efforts with comparative ease. Then Stevenson and Cook No. 2 had to pull Telegraph No. 2. The former got off the mark and always increased their lead. The great pull of the night was between Auckland Police and Beban's West Coast team. Both had an undefeated record, ind the audience expected and got a great contest. At the start the rope leaped out of the guides a fraction in favor of the West Coast men. Then the policemen did their utmost to equalise matters, but the West Coasters were too good. The mark went more their way, and though the Auckland men did their very best Beban's team were too strong, and they won fairly enough. It was a great pull. The West Coast captain had a novel method of signalling his pen. An electric torchling flashed at his back when an extra effort was required. Science up to date! One rif" the West Coast men collapsed afetr the finish, and it was some time before he came round. Several interesting single pulls were also decided.
