THE CRIMINAL LAW
A MUCH-NEEDED REFORM.

LONDON, April 29. In the House of Lords the Bishop of London moved the second reading of the Criminal Law Amendment Bill, which seeks to raise the age of consent from 16 to 18, and to otherwise increase the protection of girls. The bishop declared that there were many girls between 16 and 18 years on the London streets. If girls were properly protected until they were 21, it was surely right that their virtue should be protected until they were 18. The present, condition of the criminal law was unworthy of a Christian State. The Lord Chancellor feared that raising the age of consent would tend to produce blackmail, which was increasing in London. But the Government would not oppose the Bill The second reading was carried.
