PALMERSTON N., May 1
Instructions have been received by the police authorities to close the Palmerston North Gaol for a short term. The prisoners will bo sent to Wanganui in future. Last year £SOO was placed on the Estimates to be expended on gaol improvements, but the money was not used. OHRISTCHURCH, May 1. General Sir lan Hamilton visited the Kowai camp to-day with his staff, and inspected the troops. The manoeuvres were put off on account of rain in the night. WESLINGTON, May 1.
At 5 o'clock this morning a fire broke out in an unoccupied house consisting of 14 rooms at Kilbirnie, belonging to Mr James Clark, but it was suppressed after considerable damage had been done to the inside. The outbreak occurred under the stairs in the centre of the house. The building, which had been used as a private hospital up to five months ago, is insured In the Sun Office for £I,OOO.
