EVENING DOG SHOW

a sum display. • The Dueseiin R%JttM?l Club ate ambitious. e,ve_njng, in SMey'e Building?* they som.etb.ipg uewyand. it proved an interesting and Qu.coessfu'l oleparture. This was an evening dog show. The dogs wore benched at 6.30 p.m., and judging commenced half an hour later. The. committee had made extensive arrangements, a 4 id, a.re tQ he. congratulated on the venture. In alj there were 39 entries. The attendance, o{ the public was large, the crowd being greatly interested in the judge'© task- This, show was iii-. uugurated with a view to stimulating interest in .the fancy generally, and was a modest fo.rn\ of introduction to the big show in June. The classes, 10 in number, were totally different from usual. Fox terriers, spaniels, retrievers, Irish water spaniels, and other animal* of that c-laes were co.com.pe.ting, while nanusporUng breeds Uke bulldogs, Yorkshire terriers, collies, and poodles were entered in a one-class competition. Evening shows such aa this are very popular in the Old Country, where in every case in which a district or city club' was languishing the evening displays were, found to prove a boqn as ajww of revival. Sueh" chibi and societies* have substantially increased their membership and working capacities. Amongst prominent fanciers present,w.er e .. Meesrs B. EHis (the well-known Kaikarai fos terrier breeder), A- Mowatt (breeder of Irish water spaniels), J. Adair, A- Menzies, W Sell, Q. A. Hutten (the noted bulldog breeder), Fred Rogen, and Andrew Galloway. Mr Galloway, who has proved a valuable and energetic member of the local club, is also secretary to the South Island British Bulldog Club, and he is to be tendered a farewell here next week, prior to his departure for Wanganui, Amongst the most successful exhibitors; were Mr A, Mowatt, who secured two firsts and three seconds in iiva classes with his splendid Irish water spaniel Mike O'Flannaghan, and Mr C A. Button, who obtained three win* in three classes with hie sturdy bulldog puppy Snowdrop. Mr R- J. Menziea's imported bulldog British Beaming was also on exhibition, but ; was temporarily withheld from the ring. The dogs were all in first class condition". Tn conversation with a 'Star' reporter, the judge, Mr S Deveraux, who recently arrived from England, said : It is one of the beat evening shows I have ever <=een. In the Mother Land these displays are called "sanction'' shows, because the kennel clubs there give prizes, and therefore have to seek permission under the rules to hold them. The collie section I judged to-night were a very even lot, and I would have found '& hard to differentiate between them but for the presence of one particular, specimen. Taken all round, the young puppies on exhibition were the most ineri torious exhibits I have ever judged. I think I can state that this show is a favorable precursor of the winter exhibition. Diverse opinions may be felt and expressed in relation to the method of classification of this show, but local fanciers should remember that at Home fanciers rawly confine themselves to one breed. Thus judge? —and I am not speaking for myself, mind V ou—as well as exhibTtors achieve a wider critical experience there. In regard to some o? last evening's unsuccessful fanciers. I should say that •* little more care could be taken 'in preparation for the show ring. The first thing is to have a good dog, and the next is to show him trained and well, and that is how some candidates failed on this occaeion."
