THE ST. CLAIR SCHOOL SITE.
TO THE EDITOR, Sir,—ln your report of the deputation to the Education Board one of the members of the board stated that some of the owners of suitable sections tried to exploit the board As the owner of one of the sections under offey, of approximately two acres, I would like to be allowed to tell the public that I offered this block to the board for the sum of £l3O more than what I understand was paid for the site selected. I had then paid £3O for sand for filling in, which was to bo given in at the price. This block is within a stone’s throw of the site selected. The drainage system has now been completed right round this block, which has a frontage to three main streets. I pointed out to the board the facilities for drainage, also the frontage to three 66ft roads, and instructed my agent to inform them that I would take their present section at St. Clair in exchange at a mutual valuation to be agreed upon by arbitrators. Since offering it to the board I have sold my land at £2OO advance on the price quoted to them, but the sale has fallen through owing to a hitch in finance. Cough trey’s block was considered good value at the price for speculators to purchase, so I fail to see where the charge of exploitation mad© by a prominent member of the Education Board comes in.
The board should have told the deputation that they had purchased what they considered to be the best site, and left the matter at that. As' the board were negotiating for eight months before acquiring the muih-canvassecl site for a new school, they were lucky to secure any site at all ;— I am, etc., Landowner. AdbIZSL
