Although disappointed with the result of his endeavors to obtain a visit from the English cricketers (says the ' Australasian '), Mr Shoesmith's exertions to secure the best 'talent in pedestrianism for Australia have been successful, arid we have pleasure' 111 stating that articles have been signed by the following well-known pedestrians for a series of exhibitions in the colonies : —(1) Frank Hewitt, of Millwall, the halfmile champion, and who is also a don at any distance from 100yds'to half a mile; U) Albeit Edward Bird, of Sheffield, the champion mile runner, and who is the best ni Lligurnd from one mile to ten; (3) Geo. lopley, of London, the champion walker 01 both England and America, and who can be backed.to walk 21 miles in three Hours, or eight miles in one hour.— Evening Star,' November 18, 1869.
