In joining as a midshipman the battleship Collingwood, his appointment to which was announced on Saturday, H.R.H. Prince \ Albert will follow tho usual routine, of the ■ Navy. His advancement to the rating of a midshipman took place upon the completion of the necessary periods of study at the Royal Naval Colleges at Osborne and Dartmonth and in the cruiser Cumberland. The Trinee entered Osborne on January 14, 1909, and Dartmouth on January 14, 1911, passing out of the latter on December 1.8, 1912. when he took 64th placo_ among the cadets of his term in the examination. On January 17 of this vear he embarked in H.M.S. Cumberland, which loft on tho follnwnig day for a six-months' cruHo in the West Atlantic, returning to nevonport on July 8. If. as is probable, he _ follows the customary course of a junior naval officer, he will' serve in seagoing ships for three vears before being examined to qualify him for commissioned rank. Bv the end of this period he will become proficient in the duties of a lieutenant, and be required to perform satisfactorily, without further instruction, all the duties of an officer of that rank, not, only in regard to seamanship and general attainments, but in regard to <minnerv torpedo, navigation, and engiueerim- work On passing the seamanship and navigation portion of the lieutenant's examination he will bo eligible to become an acting sublieutenant after two years and four months' sea service, as midshipman, or in January. 1916, when he will be 20 vears of a.-V he remainder of the examination will "he due in September. 1916. on passing which Ihe Prince, will be confirmed in the rank of sub-lieutenant, and, according to the precentage of marks obtained, his seniority as lieutenant will be determined.
