PRESBYTERIAN GIRLS’ COLLEGE
A NEW PROPOSAL
BEFORE THE PRESBYTERY TO-DAY,
At this morning’s meeting of the Dunedin Presbytery the Rev. A. Whyte brought forward a proposal from Dlrs Dusbet (widow of Dr Nisbet) and Dliss Ross to assist in establishing a Presbyterian Ladies' College in Dunedin. The proposal was contained in a letter: “We offer ourselves and our establishment to the- Presbyterian Church of New Zealand on such terms as would be deemed just and equitable.” The establishment referred to is Girton College, with its home for boarders, “ Archerfield.”
Hr Whyte said that these ladies were prepared t,o place £3,000 at the disposal of the Church, at 6 per cent., without any security except the honor of the Church. The idea was to secure 20 acres or thereabouts near Dunedin, and to inaugurate a scheme that, when completed, would cost about £30,000, but could be begun with a subscription list of £5.000. moved—“ That the Presbytery record their thankfulness for the devotion and initiative of these daughters ox the Church, and appoint the following committee to consider their offers and lay before the General Assembly with full information and comment:—Revs. G. H. Balfour, A. Cameron, W. Gray Dixon, R. K. Davies, A. W, Kinmont, and A. Whyte, with Dlessrs G. DL Thomson, W. Gow, C. R. Richardson, and P. G. Pryde, with power to add to their number.”
The Rev. W. Gray Dixon seconded the motion, and in doing so spoke of the uncommonly pure English spoken at Girton College. The Rev. A. W. Kinmont, as a friend, suggested that the committee first report to the Presbytery. The Rev. A. Whyte accepted that suggestion, and the motion as amended was carried.
