WEST COAST MINERS

DIORE TROUBLE. AN ALLEGED" LOCK-OUT. Trouble occurred at the Stockton mine yesterday over the question as to what constitutes the mine mouth of the new workings. Tho men claimed that time began from entering the mouth of the old mine, ■whereas tho management claimed that it began from the time of entering the mouth of tho new mine.

The.section of men employed at the latter works turned up in accordance with their contentions, but wore ordered off home, whereupon all the men employed at the mine,_ numbering about 200, downed tools, stating that a lock-out had occurred. The company only recently opened the new mine, the mouth of which is about a mile arid a-half distant from the mouth of the old mine. At present only a small number of men are working there, but it is hoped before long to have a large number employed. The company’s cars in which the men travel cover the distance in about 10 minutes, so that the loss per man per nay coming and going if the demand is conceded will be 20 minutes. The company claimed that the agreement was never intended to be so interpreted, and that to grant tho demand would seriously hamper tho financial working of the mine. _ . WESTPORT. October 7. The mine was again idle to-day.
