SPRING FLOWER SHOW

AT PORT CHALMERS. The second Spring Show held by the Port Chalmers Horticultural Society was opened in Ihe local Garrison Had this afternoon under very favorable circumstances. The entries, which totalled over 400, exceeded the number last spring. The show was a very line one. One of the City visitors, who is well acquainted with flower shows, said the Port show this year was a grand one, and quite up to the standard of the leading country shows. It was a great, credit to Port Chalmers, and ho expected to see competitors from Port at the Dunedin shows giving the City- growers a good run. Asked to criticise, this gentleman said the weak point of the show was the lack of cultivation displayed, but the colors were line and clean. This referred to the narcissi section in particular. Noticeable features of the show were a large table of pot plants shown by Mr I. Stevenson, and suspended over that table was an exceptionally nice specimen of Lachenalia shown by Mrs J. Davidson. Very fine white hyacinths wore shown by Miss Hunter. There were some good specimens of wallflowers in the children’s section. The vegetables were rather few in number, but the quality was good. A lady’s spray and a gentleman’s buttonhole of orchids and ferns were noticeably fine. In the champion narcissi section, in which competition was keen, there wcio two entries from Dunedin. Mr J. Dagger, exhibited some later varieties of narcissi, those including Lucifer, Noble, Lady M. ' Boscawen, White Lady, Horace, Dainty, AVoardalo, King Alfred, Rennet Poe, Celia, and Glory of Iveyden. The lighting of the hall for this evening has been specially attended to. The success of the show was due to aii appreciable extent to the capable services rendered by Mr E. Moir, who, owing to the absence of the secretary, bad a good deal of extra work to attend to. The following is the prize list: POT PLANTS IN FLOWER. (Judge, Mr Jas. Rennie.) One azalea—W. H. Horn I.
