FOOTBALL

RUGBY. WELLINGTON v. CANTERBURY. A fierce and desperate struggle was witnessed at Lancaster Park on Saturday, when the annual representative match between Wellington and Canterbury was played. Though both citadels were repeatedly seriously attacked, no score was reg ls tered in the first spell, it being merely a case of knocking at the door and the invaders being beaten back. Early in the second half faulty play by the home backs let J. Ryan clean away from the centre, and he scored at the corner, H. Paton'e kick failing to add tho major points. Wellington were awarded a free kick—a decision which provoked much commentrand Paton succeeded in placing a beautiful goal. Canterbury's only score now came as the result of combined work by Simpson, Crawshaw, and Fraser. The last named took the kick, the ball dropping just under the bar. For the rest of the spell both sides made desperate but unavailing efforts to add to the register, torn jerseys and knocked heads being frequent," according to the Press Association representative. The game ended: Wellington 6, Canterbury 3. WANGANUI v. WELLINGTON B. At Athletic Park, Wellington, Wanganm defeated Wellington B by 17 points to 5. In the first spell Cunningham scored a try for Wellington, and Faber equalised with a penalty goal. The second half was all in favor of Wanganui, for whom Faber kicked a goal from a mark, and tries were scored by Meuli, H. Collier (converted), and F. Collier. SEDDON SHIELD. At Blenheim, in the Seddon Shield competition, Buller (challenger) defeated Marlborough (holders) by 5 points, a goal from a mark, to nil. THE LEAGUE CAME. THE INVINCIBLE WELSHMEN. At Newtown Park on Saturday the touring New South Wales League players met Wellington. The visitors electrified the crowd, numbering 5,000, by their brilliant dashes down the field, arid they ran up 18 points to nil in the first half—four tries (only one of which was converted) and a penalty goal and a beautiful goal from a mark from five yards over the halfway line (both by Frawley). In the second half the Wellington players were often conspicuous, and as the visitors slackened their efforts a trifle the home team registered 18 points, while the Blues were responsible for 16. The game consequently terminated: New South Wales 34, Wellington 18.

SOCCER. OTAGO 6, SOUTHLAND 1. At Invercargill on Saturday afternoon the home association's representatives , unexpectedly sustained a decided reverse from the visiting players, the score beinp: Otago 6 goals, Southland 1 goal. "Our Own" supplies the following comments; —lt was a, good hard game. The ground NOTES ON THE PLAY. It was a good hard game. Tho ground was very heavy. There were 500 spectators. Deuchrass had great success, netting four good goals. Allen scored two. Hay played excellently, and was well supported by Rarity. Hay shone in the flrsi spell, centring in good style, but had littte, to do in the second spell. Middlemiss wat a tower of strength, and was well supported by Wakelin and Weddell. Both backs (M'lvor and Beeby) showed up to advantage. The former I nave never seen play better. V. Beeby, in goal, deserved his place in the team, effecting several saves. Both the Southland wings indulged in wild shooting, and the centre, unlike Deuchrass, waited too long before shooting. Thorn© was the best of the forwards. Middlemiss and Strathers played hard throughout. Mitchell was easily the best back. Battersby might have saved hia side two goals. FIVE-A-SIDE TOURNEY AT DUNEDIN. On Saturday, at the Oval, the third and fourth grades played a tourney for medals and tho sport of the game. Mr W. G. Cocking represented tho association, and Mr C. Beeby was referee.
