CRIMINAL SITTINGS

AUCKLAND. At yesterday's sitting matters in connection with the Warkworth tragedy were investigated, Mary Winchester Hall, 31 years of age, being charged with the murder, on June 27, of her daughter, Isobel May Hall. The Crown Prosecutor described the case as a particularly sad one. He said the accused had been living happily with hor husband. For the defence evidence was given by the accused's husband and her mother to show that she had been suffering from depression. Two doctors deposed that from a subsequent examination they had no hesitation in declaring the accused to have been insane when the deed was done. The accused was committed to the Auckland Mental Hospital, pending instructions from the Minister of Internal Affairs.. The Crown Prosecutor said he would ask leave from the Attorney-General to withdraw a further charge of attempted murder.

CHRISTCHURCH. Arthur Thomas Reid, on seven charges o' housebreaking, was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment, and declared to be an habitual criminal.
