[Peb United Press Association.] GISBORNE, Mav 17. , The Hospital Board have decided to appoint a resident medical superintendent at a salary of £SOO and an honorary staff tor the new hospital. ~ , n NAPIER, May 19. At the Police Court to-day Joe Gun was fined £2O for harboring opium. The defendant elected to go to gaol for two months as he could not pay the fine. WANGANUI, May 17. Mr_ Kerr, S.M., gave his decision this morning in a case in which n barmaid at roster’s Hotel was charged with supplying liquor bo an intoxicated person. The defendant was convicted and fined £5 with costs (£7) and solicitor’s fee (£3 3s)! Ihe charge against the landlord of permitting drunkenness was adjourned till Monday.

WELLINGTON, Mav 19. Early on Monday morning John Fairley alias Wilson, one of the prisoners who escaped from Palmerston North Gaol a fortnight ago, was recaptured in a lodginghouse in Courtenay place Since escaping, Fairley had stayed four days at Palmerston. He finally left on foot, and ■walked across the country, sleeping in haystacks. On Saturday he took the train at Tokomani to Wellington. He was well (Jfcased when captured. Owing to the delay in cable-mending operations in Cook Strait, caused through heavy weather, it is thought that the Government steamer Tutanekai will bo anavailable for tendering purposes in connection with the visit of the New Zealand to Akaroa on Saturday next. If the weather cleafs the steamer may effect repairs, unship the cable gear, and get down to Akaroa in time.

AUCKLAND, May 17. W. Hughes s boatbuilding shed, butcher’s shop, and smoking-house, and another shop at tvhibianga were destroyed by fira this morning. _ The places were not insured. Tho loss is over £SOO.

Alfred Norton Smith, desertion; George Harry Martin v. Ann Martin, desertion ; Edith Sarah Stringer' v. Thomas Arthur Stringer, misconduct and drunkenness ; Hannah Elizabeth Norling v August Emmanuel Norling, drunkenness and cruelty; Olive date Gordon v. John Gordon, drunkenness and cruelty; Edwin Goodwin v. Edith Goodwin, misconduct. Jessie Armstrong, aged 48, wife of a laborer, was charged in the Police Court to-day. with having performed an. illegal operation oh a young woman, \Vho was reported to have recovered. The Supreme Court was occupied to-day in hearing an interesting case concerning the withdrawal of the trotting mare Lady Clare from her engagements at the last Spring Meeting of the Metropolitan Club. The trainer (J, Tasker) alleges that theto was art agreement with the owner to share the mate's winnings, and that the owner (Mr W. F. Clinton) scratched her for all engagements without consulting him. The oWnei* alleges that the trainer omitted to accept in the New Zealand Trotting Cup with the ihare, aftd therefore caused him loss.. Tasker claims compensation.
