MR TAFT WEAKENS. WILLING TO ARBITRATE. SOME SENATORS APPROVE, SOME ANGRY. Pres; Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. NEW YORK, January 5. (Received January 6, at 8 a.m.) Air Taft announces that he is willing to agree, to arbitrate over the Panama Canal whenever the point at issue, is actually readied. Senator Baron, commenting on this announcement, said that the United States must submit the matter to arbitration, as the only way out of tho difficulty. Senator Townsend expressed his opinion that America might as well abandon the Monrue Doctrine a.s consent to arbitration. Senator Cuilom said that Congress could of its own volition impose a canal toll without reference to any treaty. Senator Stone said that he would rather repeal the Canal Law than agree, to arbitration. He added that Mr Taft had not ctated what tribunal he desired should act as arbitrator between the two nations. He roundly denounced the Senate for rejecting the Anglo-American Arbitration Bill, and thus creating obstacles in the wav of tho world’s peace.
