LADIES’ TOURNAMENT. The ladies’ golf tournament promoted by the Otago Ladies’ Golf Club was begun at Balmaceweu this morning in dull weather, which turned to light rain in the afternoon, 'this year, in the absence of entries from such clubs as Invercargill. Oamaru, Timaru, and Christchurch, whence competitors have conic in previous years, the fixture possesses interest from within only. The qualifying round, to decide which eight players should continue in the match play for the ladies’championship of Otago, took place this morning, and though, with two exceptions, the cards returned were somewhat high, there were, few surprises in the result of this preliminary wcedingout process. Miss Gould, runner-up for the Now Zealand ladies’ championship, played at Hcretnunga (Wellington) early in the year, did the best round this morning, and Mrs Ward, who. with Miss Gould, is regarded as one of the best of the local players, was 2 strokes behind her. None of the other players succeeded in going round under 100. Mrs IV. D.M'Cartliy of St. Clair, Ihe only entrant from outside the home club, just failed (equality, the round taking her 114, or one stroke more than the eighth player to qualify. Those eight were Miss Gould, 95; M'rs Ward, 95,-.Miss I). Williams. 105:' Miss K. Rattray. 103; Mrs Fergus. 107: Mrs Mackie, 109: Miss B. Glendining, 111; and Mrs 1 ouug, 113. Mrs Fergus v. Mrs Mackie. Concurrently with this morning's round, a medal handicap war, played, resulting in a tie between Miss Gould and Mrs Ward.
