Referring to hackbloeks roads in the Auckland district the Hon. W. Fra&er (Minister of Public Works) said that to put down all the roads required would take years, and the financial aspect to ho fa-ced was a serious one. There was only a ceitain amount of money available, but tho Government intended to do their beat for the backblock settlers, and with this oiid in view would put tho construction of roads before the construction of railways, as being more necessary.
Home-brewed beer has of late years largely displaced spirits as the national drink of the Norwegians. It is so popular that it is used even at breakfast to wash down the stock dish—fried pork, smothered in onions.
