COOK ISLAND
TRADE PROSPECTS. [Special to the Star.] WELLINGTON", January 2. Judge MacCormack, Native Land Court, returned yesterday from the Cook Islands, where he acted as Administrator for 11 months. Mr Stevenson, Collector of Customs, is now temporarily filling the position, pending the appointment of a Resident Commissioner shortly. Mr MacCormack does--not consider the Islands afford much opening for white settlers, though there is some scope for planters on the outlying islands. The copra trade is capable of enormous expansion, as the market is unlimited. The fruit trade is unlikely to develop, owing to the restricted market. Judge MacCormack has left for Auckland to resume his Native Land Court duties.
