A NEW CABLE.

The new cable between Auckland and Sydney was opened on the last day of the old year. The station at Doubtless Bay has been abandoned, as the' new cable runs direct into the Auckland Post Office, where the company have special offices. On Tuesday the lion. R. lieaton Rhodes was advised by the telegraph engineer at Auckland that tho Pacific cable work was now going direct from that office, and that the company's staff would return from Doubtless Bay on New Year's Day. In connection with the opening Mr Rhodes telegraphed to Mr Milward (manager in the Pacific for the Pacific Cable Board) at Auckland as follows: Please accept my congratulations on the successful opening of your new cable, which will still further draw the bonds uniting the southern dominions of the Empire and help to bring them into closer association on points of material interest. The reply received from Mr Milward was as follows : Much gratified at receipt of your message, and pleased to be able to report that the new cables have done excellent work to-day. Am confident that when the staff are familiar with the new conditions transit times between Australia and New Zealand will be reduced to an absolute minimum.
