MAORI HILL SCHOOL.
;' TO THE EDITOK. Sir, —I have heard people say they do not believe' in prize-giving, as' they" are not always awarded fairly, and after what I witnessed at the above school break-up, I can quite- agree. For instance, there weTO prizes awarded to children who had been at school a good number of years without-a break. This is very good in its Truy', 'as it encourages the children to attend regularly; but what I did nob like •was, this: Que boy had been at school for seven years without a, break, and he was presented with a. paltry book. A girl had attended for six years, and she also received a little book. Whereas another girl had, only been there four years continuously * but she was presented with a gold! medal. If this girl was entitled to a medal, were not the others also? tCEis is class distinction, and the sooner j prizes ar# r done away with the better for all concerned. — lam, etc.,

« [The medal referred to was not a school prize, andthe girl's name does not appear on; the prize list. The medal was handed totlie chairman just previous to the break-Tip;-ceremony to be given to this, particular girl. 'lhe chairman stated in his speech that the medal was handed to him to be git-en. to her. Our correspondent's knowledge of the value of books is apparently limited. Those to which she alludes were books which anyone should be proud to possess. Any further in formation in regard to/ the matter may be obtained from the chkirman of the iSohool Committee or the head master.—Ed. 'E.S.'J
