HARBOR RECLAMATION

ENGINEERS APPOINTED TO REPORT.

At the meeting of the Otago Harbor Board last night, Mr J. Blair Mason read the report of the board in committee to consider the nomination of two engineers of repute for the purpose of bringing up a report in conjunction with the board’s engineer on the question of further reclamation at Dunedin, and to prepare the order of reference dealing with the same : Iho board in committee recommend that Messrs Cyrus Williams and Leslie Reynolds be appointed to report in conjunction with the board’s engineer in terms of the resolution of December 13, and that in the event of cither of the foregoing gentlemen being unable or unwilling to act that Mr A. Dillon Bell be appointed. It is also recommended that the following be the order of reference : (1) To report generally on the question of reclamation within the confines of Otago Harbor as affecting the works and depth of water at the entrance and as affecting the Lower Harbor, and as to whether, if anv further reclamation Will prejudicalfy affect the scour at the entrance, can such be compensated by further works at the Heads. (2) To report on the merits and demerits of the reclamation proposals now under consideration of the Board as follows ; (a) Reclamation scheme No. 1, adopted by the board and approved by the Marine Department. (b) Reclamation scheme No. 2, from the south side of Anderson Bay Inlet in a direct line to Kitchener street. (c) Reclamation scheme No. 5, from the north side of Anderson Bay Inlet in a direct line to Kitchener street. (3) To report as to the best and most economic method of dealing with dredgings, as under : (a) The sludge or impalpable matter which is slow of precipitation and in a measure unsuitably for reclamation. (b) Other dredgings more suitabilo for reclamation and speedy solidification. (4) To report on any matters which in their opinion are germane to the best interests and ultimate success of the Harbor and Port of Otago.
