Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. The cable steamer Silverton has started with the work of laying the new cable between Sydney and Auckland. The land-ing-place of the cable on the New South Wales side is at Bondi. The Pacific Steam Navigation Company's steamer Oravia has been wrecked on the Falkland Islands. All hands were saved. In giving evidence before the Empire Commission Mr Charles Bright urged a cable between Great Britain and Canada. He said the course should not be made public, otherwise if the Eastern cable were cut in war time the component parts of the Empire might be unable to arrange for joint action. At Cairo Ahmed Mukhtar was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for possessing seditious literature.
