WELLINGTON, August 24. The Turakina, which arrived from Lo* don this morning, is the first direct boat to Wellington for two months, owing to the disorganisation of trade through th« strike. She brought 250 immigrants?—lo£ males, 104 females, and 50 children. There were only 55 agisted passenger*—sl adults and 22 children. All the adults -were women coming to rejoin their husbands or to enter domestic service. The voyage was uneventful. " _., The prisoners Bergerson and Paul, who escaped from the works at Point Halswell. were brought before the Court to-day and sentenced to three months' imprisonment cumulative on the terras they are at present serving. AUCKLAND, August 24. Judgment was delivered by Mr Justice Cooper ii. the .Supreme Court to-day in the ca*e in which Soren Mar jus Mikklsen was ch.arged with kidnapping his child while she was in the rave of her mother. Mr Justice Sim convicted Mikklsen of kidnapping, but postponed sentence to enable the Appeal Court to decide a legal point. This morning Mr Justice Cooper announced that, the higher Court had upheld Mr Justice Sims decision. Although the offence wns criminal, it had to be taken into consideration that Mikklsen was the. father of the child. The needs of the esse would be met by a heavy fine, end a penalty of £2OO would be inflicted.
