The Royalkt; claim that North Portugal, except Oporto, js practically in the hands of the Monarchists. Several towns are said to have proclaimed King Manuel. On the other band, it is officially stated at Lisbon that all is quiet in the North. LONDON, October 4. (Received October 5, ->t 8.15 a,m.) The 'Daily Telegraphs 1 Madrid com*. pondent reports that, the siricter-t, censorship is being observed. Portugal Oftrespondents are only allowed to telegraph what the Government wish. The Royalists have smuggled into the country 12,000 rifles and several cannon, which were hidden in the mountains. They have also won over numerous gendarmes and Customs officials. In North Portugal many officials of high rank are favorable to a, monarchy owing to the 'ack of dusoiplin? in the army. M:.»ch money has been collected in the "Republic of Brazil in aid of the movement. Spies gave information to the Government, thus enabling the latter to make arrests of sympathis-rTR all over Portugal. Including LOCO at Oporto, there are at least 6,000 Monarchists now in gaol, including aristocrats, lawyers, officers, and priests. A number of Royalists who escaped to the mountains arc organising g small army for guerrilla- warfare.
