THE UNEMPLOYED.
TO THB EDITOB. Sir, —Referring to the meeting of <3» unemployed, I would like to remind the Mayor and Mr Small that hundred* of thousands of pounds have been spent on. sewers in the City, and I question if 20 per cent, of the "houses have been com' nected up to the sewers. Why not? What was the use of going to all the expense on sewers if the old state of tilings is allowed to exist? Conveniences are standing oat in the back yards which haxe done doty for 40 years and more, and are a rvnisznca •to neighbors who have gone to great expense in connecting up their drains. I understand the council and the Drainage Boajid have the power to compel all owners of property to connect their drains with the -sewers. If the work were pat in hand it would give emphiyi!. -v.t to a large number of men in trer. . ntting, etc., also to plumbers. The work will have to be done some time. Why not now? But no doubt owners dread the expense, and the Drainage Board may fear that if a> large nun>ber connect their pumping plant will not be able to cope with the spoiL If that is so, the sooner they make provision for it .the better.—l am, etc., Ratepayer.
