PROPOSED EXCHANGE OF LAND. The Finance Committee- of the City Council report having been in negotiation with the New Cathedral (Anglican) Board respecting a suggestion, which has been made by that body, l'.>r an exchange of part of the council's land (with buildings thereon) adjoining the Town Ha'l foi* two separate pieces of tho board's land in Cumberland street. The exchange is proposed by the applicants with tho object of enabling thciu to enlarge and improve the Kite of the new Cathedral. The land which it is suggested should be given by the council comprises about 35 poles, and las been valued by the council's valuer as follows: Land, £1,586; buildings thereon £1,500, less the sum of £2BO, which it would be jwcessaiy for the council, to expend upon same to make them fit for jJiy use to which they might bo put with advantage to the City (net), £1,220: total, £2,805. The land proposed tc be given by the board comprises (a) Lands at present leased to the tram department as a site for converter station, comprising 15.2 poles, valued by the council's valuer at £1,560; (b) an additional section in Cumberland street, containing 18.C polos, at present leased to the New Zealand Hardware Company, and valued by tlit, council's vainer at £1,785; totai. £3,345. The committee ask for instructions of council with respect to the following points; —(1) Are the council in sympathy with the proposal to treat with the board for exchange of any of the lands in question ? (2) If so, would the council prefer acquiring both sections offered by the board, and in that case paying the difference in value, amounting to £539. (3) Or would the council prefer to acquire only one of the sections (that at present occupied by the tramway department), and in that event taking the difference in value, amounting to £1,246.
