MEETINGS AND SOCIALS.

W.C.T.U. At the monthly meeting of the W. C. T. U., held at the rooms in. Moray place, a detailed report of the cnisadc was given by Mrs H. H. Driver. It was stated that as the union first organised the crusade there was no need to ask that body to affiliate with them. Branches had be«n started 1 in Wa.it.ati. Feilding, Wanganui, Otautau-, Greymbuth, Woodville, IJluif, Sti-atford, Oaruafu, Tim aim. Green Iskmd, and Mosgiel. Meetings had been held in several of the. suburban churches, and were now starting in the City. It was decided to hold the annual convention of the union. in Dunedin in March, 3912. Hospitality and. entertaining committees were ejected in connection therewith. Feeling reference was made by 'several members to the death of Mr T.' l l '.* Taylor, and the following resolution was carried by the members silently standing:—"That the union deplore the 'sad death of Mr T. E. Taylor, who' for nVany years did such unselfish and noble work for temperance and the 'women's cause generally. Wo also tender to MrsTaylor our deepest-sympathy in the loss of one who, as husband and father, carried his high ideals into bis home life." GREEN ISLAND NO-LICENSE LEAGUE. The recently-I'onnrd league in connection, with the Green-Island No-licensc movement I held their •first meeting in the Protestant | Alliance Hall on Monday night. The object of the meeting was. to listen to an, address horn Mrs Barton, of Glasgow, and after a few words of introduction the chairman called'on'Mrs Barton to speak. Her address — full of informing facts -'rind kindled with pleasant humor—was listened to* with attention. At the close of her -speech, which lasted an hour and a-half, a resolulion .of thanks .to Mr.s Barton was moved by the Rev. E. Bandy and seconded by Mr J. King, and enthusiastically carried. Hopes were entertained bv the league .that the lady's services might be secured again at an early date. HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS. ■ The ex-Otasro Boys' High School gathering to bo held in the- Waratah Tea- Room? tomorrow evening promises io be a great success. As usual with these Rat lie rings, the country boys are coming to the fore in great numbers. The chair will be occupied by Mr J. F. M. Eraser. K.C. The following old boys will propose and reply to toasts: —• Mes-srs S. »Solomon. K.C.. F. Calvert, Peter Williams, and Walter Blackie.- The rector (Mr Moirel) will reply to "The School," and Mr D. Brent to ••Our Old Masters." Musical nrlangcments are under the supervision of Mr J. A. Hiiggit-t, who has already a first-class programme in hand. Wc understand, it is proposed to form an association of all. old boys who went to the school previous to its. beconiiug' virtually a State school., with the object of "keeping tip old 'acquaintanceship ■and assisting the prize'livt' of the present school. - LODGE SOCIALS. . The members of the Loyal Excelsior Lodge, No. 41, I'.A.E.S. of A., held .a vcrv successful social oti Friday night in the' Volunteer Hall, Green Island. The .hall was nicely decorated by a hard-work-ing committee. About 70 couples took,-pal t in. the dancing, which was kept in good tune bv M.C'.s It. Herbison, J. Grant, W. Watt, H. M-Laoluan, and. E. Faetier. The catering was in the capable hands of Bro. Jas. M'Mullan, assisted by the lady frieittks of the- lodge. North-east"Valley." Bro.' Ainslie, G.R., presided over a good attendance of members. During the concert which followed Bro. Ainslie, U.K., presented Bro. A. The ladies had j charge of the programme, and provided a j ve:y entertaining and amusing evening, j Songs were contributed by Misses James i ;;nd Williams, and a recitation by Missi South. Misses Parker and James also ! rendered a serio-comic duet, wliile many I coon choruses were contributed by the | ladies in their fanciful representations of j coon girls, (lames and competitions were ! also indulged in. and refreshments were i partaken of during the interval. An en- j jovable evening concluded with, a hearty vote of thanks to the ladies. DEBATE, 'ls it Desirable- to Make Sport a Profession?' was the question debated at the weekly meeting of the Y.M.C.A. Literary and Debating Society held last night. Messrs Jones, Michael, and Fleming spoke in support of ihc affirmative, and Messrs Hughes, MTherson, and M'Gregor for the negative. The question was very keenly debated, the participants bringing forward all the available pros and cons. A vote taken at the close showed that the audience- considered that- the negative speaker:-, had made out the better case.
