THE ANGLICAN CHURCH.

MEETING AT ST. KILDA. A lairly-well attended and enthusiastic mooting was hold at the St. Kikla Town Hall last evening to consider the best moans of raising the balance of money required to erect a building lor tho Anglican Church in St. Kikla. ll’.e Vicar (the Rev. E. Denng Evans) presided. The Chairman opened the proceedings by reading a letter from the Rev. E. L. "Woodhouse, a former curate or tho parish, detailing the early history of tho St. Kikla Mission, and wishing the project every success. The Chairman said tho parish had grown, and was still growing, and the congrogatioiis at St. Ivilda maintained a high average, but no real progress could be made Until they had a home of their own. They had no room for their various organisations, such as the Sunday schools, tho guilds, ote. The hall was distinctly uncomfortable, and did not impress one as a place of worship. Tho question then arose : V hat had to be done, and what would be the next step ? They had throe sections, and the committee had recently acquired another one. It was proposed to bund a hall which would be suitable for holding services in, which eventually would bcTtho Sunday school, and in live years’ time they might attempt building a chim-h. Tho plans, Avhit'li would ho shown to those present, were modelled on buildings which lie had seen at Homo in old almshouses, and .would at least be a home for them. Ho had to thank Mr Dunning, a member of the i committee, for drawing up the. plans. Mr H. W. S. Hellyer, treasurer of the branch, thanked the for the work they had already done. They had ,■£33o in the bank, and he thought that tho next sale of work Mould realise at least £IOO. Tho building which it was proposed to erect would cost about £I,OOO. Some months ago they made an effort, which had since died down, but he hoped that, with a curate in sight, it would not be long Lielore they had a home of their own. Mr D. Harris Hastings (chairman ol the Building Committee) reported what bad been done recently. He had heard that tho vicar wished to call the new building Holy Cross Chapel, and as September 11 was Holy Cross Day, ,ie hoped tho foundation stone bo laid on that day. He was certain when once a start was made there would be no difficulty in raising the money. Ho hoped that the foundation stone would, with the vicar’s consent, be laid in accordance with Masonic rites, by the W.M. of Lodge Oceanic, of which their worthy treasurer, Mr Hellyer, was and he felt sure a largo sum of money would ho collected that day. Captain Easther, vicar's churchwarden, wished the. movement every success. Ho had always been in favor of one parish—viz., the parish of Caversham —and he felt sure that the parishioners from the other end of the district would help St. Kikla. The Chairman said that alter anticipating tho £IOO from tho sale of work, another £l5O would he necessary. He then made an earnest appeal for this money. £Go was subscribed in the room, and cards representing £2O more were also taken up. The result of the meeting was that an immediate start will he made, and the foundation stone laid as arranged on September 11.
