PALMERSTON NOTES.
Sirs Part on, the Scottish tempers nco speaker, delivered an address in the local Town Hall on Thursday last. Despite the most unfavorable climatic conditions, a fair crowd turned out and listened to an address well worth travelling some distance to hear. At its conclusion a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Barton. A vote of thanks was also accorded the Mayor for pre riding. At the Football Club room on Wednesday evening last the members debated on the question “ Which is Entitled to the Greater Esteem: the Poet, the Statesman, or tbs WairiorP’ Mr J. Pagan ltd on behalf of the Poet, Mr C. Sharp on behalf of the Statesman, and Hr T. Pickett on behalf of the Warrior. Several members added a few words, after which a vote was taken- Hie first vote resulted a & follows:—Po.t 9, Statesman 12, Warrior 2; while in the second vott the result was; Poet 10, Statesman 13. A vote of thanks to the speakers was earned. The third of the series of debates will be held in about a fortnight's time, when the subject of ‘Should Bachelors be Taxed?' will be thrashed out. The members of the Presbyterian Church Choir held a very enjoyable social on Wednesday evening last in honor of one of their members who bad recently been promoted to the sphere of married life— viz., Mrs D. Reid. Mr O. Barclay made the presentation, and after briefly referring to Mrs Reid's long and valuable connection with the choir presented her with a dinner set. The Rev. Mr Clarke also spoke in complimentary terms of Mrs Reid’s services, and Mr Reid replied on behalf of We wife. The first stage of the new defence scheme was further advanced on Wednesday last, when Surgeon-captain Will conducted the medical examination of the local Cadet* and Territorials. In the afternoon some 30 boys presented themselves for examination, two of whom were rejected as, being medically unfit for service. In the cveninjf some 40 young men faetd the examiner, and again two 'were rejected as not up to the standard of health required.—Own correspondent, July 31.
