Mr Arthur R. Watson recently proceeded to England for the purpose of obtaining as extra chief engiaem’aoeftifkate.

His father ? Mr J. Wateon, of Port Chalmers, ' received advice last night that he had successfully passed his examination in London. This is the second Port Chalmers boy that has recently secured this much-pnzed diploma. Mr Watson, after the completion of his apprenticeship at A. and T. Burt’s, had several years’ experience on the Union Company’s steamers. Owing to the late arrival of the Moana from Sydney, the departure of the Aorangi from Wellington was postponed -until late on Wednesday night, in order to allow passengers and mails to connect. ■ About 30 or 40 tons of general cargo were shipped by the Aorangi for San Francisco, and about 60 tons (principally canned meats and produce) are on consignment to the Islands. Her Wellington passengers number about 62. Den of Glamis, s.s., from New York via Australia, is reported by cable to have left Sydney for Wellington, whence she will proceed to other New Zealand ports to continue discharge. Pukaki, s.s., is due to leave Lyttelton on Monday, and is expected here” on Tuesday or Wednesday. She will return to the West Const to load for Dunedin. The Norddeutscher Lloyd steamer Goeben arrived at Sydney on Thursday afternoon from Europe. New Zealand passengers will be brought on by the Warrimoo, sailing to-day from Sydney, and due at Wellington on Wednesday and at Dunedin next Saturday.

Included in latest charters reported is that of the steamer Beckenham, Japan to New Zealand —produce. As the Hanroto was going alongside the Glasgow wharf at Napier about 5.30 last evening she ran into the end of the wharf, cutting through a 10ft timber bay and about 4ft of concrete wharf beyond it. The rent in the wharf is approximately 14ft long and of the same width at the entrance. The damage to the wharf is considerable. The steamer is also considerably damaged at the bow a few feet above the water line. The stem is dented, and the steel plates are open for a distance of about 7ft. The harbor master was in charge at the time. In proposing success to the Bluff Harbor at the luncheon on the Corinthic Captain Hart said it was a harbor capable of extension when the future demanded. The harbor was all right, and the fact that the tides had to be watched was nothing unusual. When the Corinthic could enter on a dark night and come alongside without so much as crushing an egg it completely refuted the charges that had been made* against the harbor. As to the approaches to the wharves, lights, etc., they were all first rate. Arrangements have been completed by a Gisborne firm for the shipment of regular supplies of white pine timber from Gisborne to the Svdney market. The initial shipment will be made by the barquentine Carla. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. OMAPERE. July 28.-8 p.m., Claymore. from Onehuiiga. AUCKLAND, July 28.—10.35 p.m,.
