The Nelson ' Colonist' states it is understood that the directors of the Golden Bay Shipping Company are considering the question of building an up-to-date weamer at Nelson to run in conjunction ■with the Hina (formerly known as the Lady Barkly). Messrs Willis, Sindall, and Co., London, under date May 31, quote the following rates of freisrht per cargo steamers to Auckland, Wellington, Ijyttelton, and Dunedin from London, Avon-mouth, Glasgow, Manchester, and Liverpool :—Pig iron. "bars, plates, nails (iron). 22a 6d tin plates, 32s 6d ; galvanised iron hoops sash weights, sheet lead, 27s 6tl; zinc, in casks, 22s 6d; spikes, rivet*, shot, 32s 6d; rouch measurement, 40s; fine measurement, 555; hollowware, 355: wire netting, 30s. When steamers call at Timaru and Bluff cargo is carried by them at the same rates as to major ports. Cement, which, has hitherto been cha»red 3d per cask to Timaru and the Bluff extra, is now taken at the same rates as to the major porta. Owners of tranrn steamers will doubtless be pleased tc hear of a new market which has been recently opened up, says ' Fairplay.' From the island of Makaiea shipments of phosphates aro now being made. Tt is about five miles long by two and a half in width, and situated at the extreme -western end of the Loy Archipelago Group, approximately in latitude 15.50 S.. longitude 143.11 W., about 123 miles from Papeete, Tahiti.

Captain C. Angus, of the Mapourika, has been appointed surveyor of ships at Wellington. This additional appointment has been rendered necessary on account of the large increase in the work connected with this branch of the Marine Department. Captain Angus hails from Scotland, which country he left about eight years ago to enter the service of the Union Company.

THBEE OLYMPICS. • Eventually, it seems, there are to be three vessels of the Olympic class on the Southampton-New York Tout*. The second of these, of course, is tho Titanic, which will be ready for service at the end of the year. The third has yet to be built. These mammoth ships will cost the White Star "Line somewhere about a million and a-half apiece, so that, roughly speaking, the three vessels will represent a capital of close upon £4,500,000, invested in a single weekly service across the North Atlantic. Such figures are unparalleled, but they are the inevitable outcome of the demand for huge ships. Not rr.any years back a good deal less than a million of money would have secured a very fine fleet, but, as things go nowadays, the vessels would have been of modest tonnage. The largest of the modern liners engaged in the Australian trade cost anywhere between £300,000 and £350,000. The Olympic, of course, is nearly four times as big.

Lord Pirrie, the builder of tho Olympic, is, it is understood, going to make a voyage to the United "States in her. He will thus have an opportunity of personally noting the working of her recipro-turbine engines. Re-cipro-turbine engines threaten to become quite fashionable. They have been adopted in the Orama, the new Orient •liner, which is to be launched this month, and in the Arlan/a. the new mail steamer which the "Roval Mail Steam Packet Company are building for their South American service.—London 'Telegraph.'
