WEDNESDAY HARRIERS

On Wednesday afternoon tho St. Andrew Harriers held their- Mile and A-half Novice Race at Tahuna Park. Fourteen runners faced the starter. The weather was fine, but the track was a bit hard for running. The limit men started off at a good pace, and Telfer took tho lead before the first lap was finished, with Sims, Curr, and Parker very close together following close behind. The field then spread out, Telfer gettinc; well out in tho lead. The scratch man, Ferens, made a good effort to come up, but was too far back to come anywhere near the front men. The second lap showed a little alteration, the positions being : Telfer about fifty yards from Thomson and O'Hara, with Kelly bringing up the rear. Thomson made a splendid effort to catch Telfer, but the latter held his own to the finish, with Thomson (about twenty yards behind) second, and Kelly (about fi'fev vards behind the second man) finished third. Result: D. Telfer (170 yds) 1, G. H. Thomson (25yds) 2, Kelly (45yds) Z. Time, 7min 37i?sec. The thanks of the club are due to Messrs H. E. Clark (timekeeper) and J. Roxburgh (starter), also to tho O.R.F.U. for use of the ground. . The North End Harriers held a onomile handicap on tho Gardens track yesterday afternoon. The weather was fino and the track was in fair condition, though a great many loose stones in places made things awkward for the runners. There were ten starters, and a good race ensued, culminating in a great finish. The following is the result:—H.' Hogg (ssec) 1, C. Files (ssec) 2. E. Mowat (ssec) 3. Time, omin 6sec. Also started : J. Sparrow (ssec), W. Mitchell (ssec), M. Mitchell (12sec), J. Clements (20sec), C. Fraser (20sec), F. Beadle (20scc), A. Ritchie (20sec). After three laps had been run the runners were in much the same order as at tho start, but in the next lap tho field closed in. When the bell rang J. Clements was in the lead, and ho struggled on till half tho lap had been traversed, when Files passed him. The latter held the lead right into the straight, but Hogg, in an excellent sprint, cut him down in the last stride, and won an excellently-judged race by a foot; Mowat syds away.
