At a meeting of the Council of the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce last week . a letter was received from the Sydney i Chamber directing attention to alleged delays in the discharge of steamers with * rails at Williamstown through the ab-, I ' sence of proper traversers at the pier for I .the large trucks now generally used for ' transporting this class of goods. With ' the object of taking further action it was ( decided that the Sydney Ckimber of i Commerce, be asked to supply more specific i information with regard to the names and i the steamers which bid been subjected to ; such detention at Williamst-own. The \ delay of steamers at Melbourne has often ] been commented upon by shipping people j in Dunedin. Tt has been particularly \ noticeable in the wise of steamers from i New York —a voyage which is loner j enough without a delay of several weeks i j at Melbourne. j. THE PRINZ WALDEMAR, j] Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, May 25. (Received May 25, at 9.20 a.m.) The Prinz Waldemar’s owners have been informed that they can remove the vessel ; from quarantine without the officers and ’ crew. The captain refused to allow the steamer to go out until he is in charge. '

AN EMPTY LIFEBOAT. . 1 Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, May 24. An empty lifeboat marked "Gayolargoi" has been found in the Bay of Biscay. Tho Gayolargo was bound from Swansea \ to Tampico (Mexico). Twenty-nine hands are missing. It is considered that the vessel has foundered. j THE PAPANUI AGAIN. • The Australian Shipping Company, who recently purchased tho steamer Papanui, and, after having her repaired, , despatched her with a full cargo of Australian products and a largo number of passengers to London, aro liaving trouble in socuring return cargo and passengers owing to the operation of a system of deferred rebates granted by the shipping ring in the United Kingdom. Very little cargo has been booked for the tc- ; turn voyage of tho Papanui to be made in Juno, although every other steamer on the berth for Australia is being loaded almost to tho hatches. Evidence is not wanting as to tho reason. A Melbourne firm arranged with the Papanui's owners for tho carriage of 12,000 casks of cement from London, and cabled Home instructions to their agents to forward tho consignment by the steamer. A reply was quickly forthcoming that the utients could not comply, as if they shipped by the Papanui they would lose their deferred rebates. The Papanui's owners then arranged to bny the cement in London, carry it to Melbourne, and sell it there to the consignees. A cablegram to the cement manufacturers brought a refusal to sell to tho shipping company, and arrangements for shipping by another line i have had to be made. j The Australian Shipping Company are 1 not only experiencing trouble in securing I cargo, but are boing undercut by the shipping ring in regard to passenger | fares. The vessel carries aocommoda- j tion for which from £3B to £45 is-charged J for the voyage Home. A share of the imj migrant traffic has been applied for twice | to the Immigrant Bureau in Melbourne, j but no business lias resulted. | The Australian Shipping Company hope j to make the Papanui a pioneer steamer 'of a large locally-owned Heel. and an ap- ( plication is being made to the Stale and i Federal Government* for a share of their j cargo consignments from London. 'The result will be awaited with interest.— J Melbourne ' Ace.' i SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. j LYTTELTON.
