ALHAMBRA v. PIRATES.

TO THE EIHTOK. Sir, —I sec by to-night’s issue of the ‘Star’ a report of the O.R.F.U meeting, wherein Referee M‘ Taggart had occasion to caution Howlands, of Ibe Alhambra-, for kicking an opponent, and also to report him to the Union, The referee adds to bis report: "1 fdlt that I could not order

him off, because at tho time I was not, certain that I had the right man.” Now, if this referee wa s that certain of his man that ho could and report him, why ! could he not order him off? I think the O.R.F.U. should get a report from tho I referee as to why he cautioned a playet , ho was not sure of for an offence which ! places the player in a position to be : ordered off. I noticed an error on tho referee’s part in this same <match. The Alhambra wore hard-pressing the Pirates within the Pirates’ twenty-five, and a Pirate player took the ball off a bounce and appealed for a “ mark,” and the whistle blew. Of course, I expected to goo a scrum; but no, he had his kick. This is an instance of where a referee hears a player’s appeal and sees him with the ball ; and jf ho is not certain he gives a scrum, and if ho is certain he gives a kick. Therefore Referee MTaggart must have boon certain of this appeal. I eny he was wrong. I know the referee’s task of controlling a liard game is not all honey, but still it must not bo forgoten that the looker-on sees most of the game.— l am, i etc., Fea-Ales-Tair. | May 23. [
