THE GAME IN SOUTHLAND. [SrECIAL TO THE STAE.] INVERCARGILL, February 23. A trial match, in view of the forthcoming Otago and Hawke Cup matches, iras played in lnvercargill yesterday afternoon in line though windy weather. There was a good attendance. The contesting teams were the representative eleven as selected for the Hawke Cup match and the next best thirteen, who put up a strong fight, and would probably have won had they not declared their innings closed rather early. Batting first, the thirteen declared closed at 5.15 with a total of 126 for ten wickets. Miles made 28 not out and Reid 25 not out. Of tho representative bowlers, Bannerman took four wickets for 20, Ward three lor 36, and Doig two for 26. With an hour in which to make 127, the representative team succeeded in their task just on time. When the last over was commenced six runs were,, wanted, but Bannerman knocked 17 off it, and the team won by four wickete and 13 runs. Bannerman made 57 not out, Doig 36, and Poole 20. Lillicrap and Reid were the chief bowlers. The Southland team were to have left for Christchurch this morning to play the final match of tho Lord Hawke Cup, but negotiatioiii; with Rangitikei failed to bo completed, and the trip has to bo postponed until after tho Otago match on March 8 and 9. The same team as that selected for the Raiigitikei match will probably meet Otago at lnvercargill. WEDNESDAY MATCHES. Penrose's defeated Albion on the Mornington Ground, the former making 126 runs and the latter 34. Haig (23), Bennett (22), L. Cameron (30), and Mason (28 not out) wero top scorers for Penrose's. Martin was the only one to reach double figures for tho Albion. L. Cameron and J. Haig bowled for the winners, and Duthio, Kemnitz, and Pollard for tho losers. Yesterday afternoon the Caversham and Valley Lodges (M.U.1.0.0.F.) met at cricket on the Carisbiook Ground. Caversham batted first, and knocked up 244, Sweeney, Watson, and. J. Smith scoring the major portion; and Valley responded with 74, to which F. Williams, J. Timlin, and Smyth were the principal contributors. Tho Carisbrook Club kindly provided a wicket and material.
