LONDON, February 21. (Received February 22. at 10.20 a.m.) Australian Mortgage Company, £100; Dalgcty and Co., £5 15s to £6 ss. BRITAIN’S WONDERFUL YEAR. Air Lloyd George's Budget of 1909 was denounced by his enemies as “the end of all things”—to quote Lord Rosebery’s now famous phrase. Vet the trade figures for 1910, which have just bceii issued, aretho best on record ! Hitherto 190/ has been the wonderful year in Britain’s oversea trade, but 1910 is even better. The turnover in trade is nearly £50,000,000 greater than in the “ boom ’’ year of 1907. With two or three trifling exceptions every branch of industry shows expansion. And the significant thing is that by far the greatest expansion lias taken place in the export of articles wholly or mainly manufactured. British exports of articles wholly or mainly manufactured increased during the year by £46,264.818, while the importation"of articles wholly or mainly manfactured increased by only nine millions. Deductions must be made even from this nine millions, for it includes the raw material of other industries —0.g., paper for books and newspapers, iron ingots. chemicals, etc. One of the most striking contrasts is in regard to machinery. Britain exporter! £29,295.721 worth of machinery, or an increase of £1.239,078 on the year. On the other hand, the import of'machinery was less than four and a-half millions —an increase for the year of only £32,967. The imports of raw material totalled £261,000.000 tor the year, being an increase of £41.000,000 over 1909. 1 his is an increase under every bend. On the other hand, the excess ot the total value of imports over exports decreased by eleven millions last year ns compared with 1909. thanks to the splendid increase in the export trade.
