MR FISHER AND ME FOWLDS ENTERTAIN.

CAPE TOWN, December 9,

Mr Fisher and Mr Fowlds gave a farowell dinner to Lord and Lady Gladstone, Lord Do Villiers (Chief Justice), and a representative gathering of citizens.

Ixird Gladstone said he had been only too glad to show the colonial visitors all the attention they deservedasdistinguished representatives of their Dominions.

Mr Fisher, in ])roj>osmg the toast of the Union of South Africa, referred to the triumph achieved in creating the Union. Tho interests of Australia and New Zealand woro now being linked with those of South Africa, and these interests included participation in national questions. He returned thanks for the boundless kindness shown him in South Africa.

The Union Assembly rejected a proposal to reduce the Premier's salary i om £4,000 to £3,500, and tlwiso of other Ministers from £3,000 to £2,500. ])r Jameson stated that the supporters of tho proposal were not really reducing salaries, but creating them. Ho contended that the present proposal would load to a reckless use of State funds.
