Jessop was in an unimportant match at -J. seaside resort, and went, in to kit early in the afternoon. But, alas! alter ■naking 10 runs in the first over ho was rim 31lt. The usual cry of '"How's that, urapire' J " was raised, and in reply the umpire, with Khameless deliberation, answered: '•>*ot out!'' After tbo match Jessop sought the umpire Mil asked the reason of his decision. "Did you think I was going to give you out on a Saturday afternoon, with all these ■folk come on purpose to sec you?" was the astounding reply.
