OCEAN LINKR'S MAIOKN VOYAGE. [From Ouk Own CoßitKsroNDKNi.] LONDON, October 28. To-morrow the new liolorua, the finest of the Now Zealand Shipping Company's fleet, leaves Plymouth on her maiden voyage to tho Dominion. She sailed from. London yesterday a full ship, carrying 440 third class pa-ssongers. 83 second cla, s, and 52 first elaj-ii—a total of 580. Mich lias boon written in praise of the Poionia, and New ZeaJanders in the Dominion will soon have an opportunity of judging her merits for themselves. 1 'do not think they will find that these, have been exaggerated. Captain I. A. .Sutclif'fe. who has something like 6ixty-four voyages to New Zealand to his credit, has command of the liotorua, and his staff are as under :—Chief officer, Mr A. F. Dunn; second offb er, Mr F. Patteson; third ollicer, Mr J. ('. Hancock; four officer, Mr C. L. Soady : chief engineer, Mr J. H. Evaiu-;; second engineer, Mr A. Allan ; third engineer, "Mr J. Malcolmson; fourth engineer. Mr 11. Walker; fifth engineer, Mr .J. M'Kcnzie; chief refrigerating engineer, .Mr YV. P. Smith; second refrigerating engineer, Mr I>'. P. Montgomery; chief steward, .Mr F. W, Harris; second steward, Mr Slurrock.

Tho New Zonland Shipping Company entertained the High Commissioner and a number of New Zealandere at- luncheon on tho Rotorua on Saturday at the Royal Albert Dock, awl afterwards the t gueftt* were shown over the new ehip. Mr 0. T. Haycroft, one of the directors, presided at one, of the long tablre, ami Captain Sutcliffe. at the other. The gueM* numbered ahout fifty, invitations having been sent 'to tho following : Sir Win. and Lady Hall-Jones, Sir "Win. and Lady Ruseoll, Mr and Mts Pallisor, Pfon. Seymour Thorn George, Major-general Rob ley, Mr and Mrs T, E. Donne, Mr and Mrs T. Hamer, Mr Albert Marks, J)r and Mrs Myers, Mr and Mrs M. Mver.s, Mr and Mrs J. A. Mason, Mr P. A. Vaile, Mr Walter Abrahams, Mr Lawrio Abrahams, Mr and Mrs Woolf, Mr Riunsoy, Mr H. Maryon Green, Mr and Mrs Seholefield, Mr and Mrs Whitelaw, Mr Stephen Fortescue, Mies Ouseley, and Mr Leslie Purnell. Sir William Hall-Jones -proponed ",Success to the New Zealand Shipping Company," and comp'imentcd the company on t!io'latest addition to their fleet. In a'v.-in of genial criticism he suggested that the tiino held amvfifl rcka tie shinjjinij com-

panics should shorten the time taken by their steamers ini travelling between London and New Zealand. ,Ha put in a pies, for faster steamers, pointing out that the distance to hinds oversea was measured in the public mind not by miles, but by tiie time taken to get. tnere. —Mr Hayeroft, replying on behalf of the company, said that requirements as to speed were noi matters that could be settled in a moment, but he quite agreed that they had got to get over the difficulties. The watchword of the company wae "■ Advance," and the nxst earef'd attention would bel given to the points iaifed. Speaking of the fittings of the Rotorua, Mr Hayeroft said the taste and refinement shown in the decorations were, due to the wife of Mr W. C. Dawes, who had taken a very keen personal interest in the details of equipment. "Success to the Rotorua" was proposed by Mr T. E, Donne, who said the new ship marked an e|>och- in the company's existence. She was the finest of (ho fleet, aim would Le a credit to any Heel in the world. In regard to the comparatively low rate of speed, it should not be forgotten that NewZealand was a long way "oil. and the voyage took a great deal of coal. If Captain Sutclill'e ran the Rotorua up to her fill! capacity the agents would want to know the reason for his great coal bill. The Rotorua had been built by a iirur of big repute, added Mr Donne, and she was commanded by Captain SutclifFe. who had made no fewer'than sixty-four voyages to New Zealand. Captain Sideline replied to the toast. Anyone who had been in New Zealand, he said, knew with what wonderful hospitality the Xew Zealandeio ciiterlainccl their visitors. ;ind! to men of his profession if almost iseemed as if they were honiewaui bound when going to die Dominion, instead of out ward bound. In the course of hu; voyaL'c thither be had had the pleasure of meeting many distinguished Xew Zo.lI.nidcrs. One wa-s the late Mr Seddon, whom lie took back to Xew Zealand at the clo-se of Ibe ku-.t Coronation. Sir William Ku.-fell had tr ivolled on his ship. In regard to (he Rotorua, everything had been done'" with the 'greatest consideration ioi the welfare of the imssengers. and he was very proud to have the command of her. ami to be connected with the Xew Zealali ! Shipping Company. Alter lunch the visitor were' conducted over lite vessel. They were loud in their praises of the comfortable lounges and saloons, the spacious cabins, the attention given 1o the comfort of the third class, thcchildren's nursery, and other- features of this splendid ship. .«/ full description r.f tho Rotorua has already been published, but tho following figures supplied by the companv may be of) interest : GiofiS tonnage, 11,130'; length, 484 ft; depth. 36ft ; beam, 62ft; speed, 15.77 knots; carrying capacity, 761.604 cubic feet; fresh water tanks,' 37,550 gallons; .insulated space, 299,540 cubic feet; carcasses of frozen ino.it-, 100,000: coal, 2.030 tons; coal reserves, 2.113 tons; two sets triple-expan-sion reciprocating engines, fbe low-pressure turbine driving three propellers on separate shafts.
