CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
DEATH OK MRS EDDY. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. NEW YORK. December 4. Tho death of .Mrs Mary Baker Eddy, the founder and leader of the Christian Scientists, at the age of eighty-eight, is announced. [This remarkable woman was of humble origin and no great learning'. She ''discovered" Christian Science when she was forty-four years old, and gradually established her- church, which she ruled with absolute autocracy to the eiWl. All dissentients —and there were many—were ruthlessly silenced or expelled, and so great is the depth of human credulity that she imposed her "bible"—out of which vast sums of money were received by her personally—and i'ts teachings upon men and women who were her superiors both intellectually and morally. There wa.s and is, however, a substratum of truth in her doctrines, or they would have been laughed out of existence long ago.]
