MINING.

News has been received that the Morgan suction dredge resumed work on November 30, but as prospects did not show any improvement \voik was temporarily abandoned in order that the nature of the wash at the top end might be ascertained. The dredge was then shifted up on Friday. Prospects on the side showed an improvement, and the wash is not so rough as at the bottom end. The secretary of the Nokomai Hydraulic Sluicing Company reports that No. 1 had a full week's sluicing, and that good progress has been made. The top material has been blown off to a depth of 28ft, and tho manager expects to get a further 6ft blown cff. The water is still slack, and it requires tho combined water from No. 1 race and the Lion race to leep things going. The manager states that lie can occasionally spare a little for tho dam. This ran out on Thursday, but filled again on Saturday. No. 2 ha 6 started sluicing. The work of extension of tho No. 3 is being carried on steadily, and the pi]>es for the job are now being delivered on the claim. Both machines at the Karuunui claim are running well. The paddock was rather low during the week. The water has now risen as the pumping plant has been driven a httlo faster, lour heads of water being pumped in. The Central Charlton return of 21oz lldwt of retorted gold is for 254 houis' dredging, the amalgam before retorting being 450* 15dwt obtained for the week ended November 25 for 125 hours' dredging and 300,amalgam for 134 hours for week ended Dec-ember 2. so that last week's dredging was 'about 15oz of retorleif gold on the creek sido of cut No. 2. Tho Mystery Flat dredgo worked the centre and western sections last week, and met with very poor wash. This week tho section next the hill is being worked. At the Mastertoii claim tho ground- is inclined to be shallower over most of the eastern cut. Across the centre the depth is unchanged, while; most of the western cut is a little over 30ft in 'depth. The best of the wash Mes on the bottom, the deep ground being drifty and poor. The Golden Bed dredge is expected to start work again in a few days. The Rising Sun dredge worked ahead 12ft last week on a. ■cut 150 yds wide. There is no change in the ground. Prospects continue fair. During October dividends amounting to £97,469 were distributed by the West Australian gold mining companies. This makes a grand total to date of £21,177,449. For the ten months ended October 31 the sum of £854,439 has been distributed, as compared with £1.114,457 for the corresponding period of 1909, thus showing a serious falling off in the profits of the mines. THE SHARE MARKET. DUNEDIN EXCHANGE. The market shows no signs of livening up. One sale in New Sylvias at 3s 9d comprised tho sum total of tho two morning sittings, and there wa.s only one sale reported, Waihis 1166—a poor price. On yesterday afternoon's 'Change sales were reported in Island Blocks (6s 3d) and -May Queens (3s 4<l). No sales wero made on 'Change. [From Our Own Corrkspondent.] There k nothing fresh to report in the dredging line, the two Rise and Shines and the Rising Sun being the only goldwinners that count. The return from tho like and Shine No. 1 showed an improvement, whereas that from No. 2 was really good, considering that she lost a long day allowing the Clutha River dredge to pass her en route to the claim, above the managed to foul tho Rise and Shine No. 2's headline, which had been lowered to allow her to pass. Tho Rising Sun continues to do remarkably -well, as her retmrn of over 590z proves. All the sluicing claims on the Nevis and Luggate arc -working full time, as the continued drought is making the water supply lessen. I understand that the New Luggate Hydraulic is doing none too well at present. The latest advice is that the hard day bottom continues bearing little or no gold. WAIHI SHAKES.
