Some idea of the huge quantities required for an expedition of this nature and length may be gathered from the fact that the insignificant item of salt alone weighed three-quarters of a ton. The Cerebos Salt Company supplied the previous expedition, and Captain Scott entrusted them with his order for the present one. The wood used in making the cases is of the lightest but strongest character, and each c.'kse is bound round all the seams, the whole being thus ensured against rough weather and rough usage, whether on board or over the icefields. It is a feather in the cap of the Cerebos Company that, in addition to the many marks of scientific approval they have already received, and the Royal patronage which they have for so many years enjoyed, Cerebos Salt should have been selected by this carefullyplanned scientific expedition as the best salt obtainable.
