BOY SCOUTS

The newly-formed St. Kilda troops paraded on Saturday last, there being a good turn out. The troops were under the control of Chief Scoutmasters Williams and Foote. -ne afternoon’s work included knotting, first aid, and other useful work. Tho troop meet to-night in the Musselburgh Methodist Church Hall at seven o’clock, when new lads will be enrolled. The monthly meeting of officers was held on .Monday last, when it was decided to make a final effort in regard to the coming demonstration to bo held on November 9. Tho items to be staged include rescue work, ambulance, signalling, fire-lighting, physical drill, stave drill, recitations, pyramid, and a living tower. The meeting will be in the hands of Air J. 11. Hosking, while tho Garrison and other bands will assist. The object of the evening’s entertainment is to secure fundf for equipping a club room for scouts, as also to provide equipment, etc., for real good work. District Commander Jones will visit Henley on Saturday next and arrange for the formation of a "troop of scouts in that locality. The St. Clair troops, under Chief Scoutmaster Williams, met on Saturday afternoon last, and marched in to St. Kilda, where they joined forces with the St. Kilda troops. The afternoon was put in by the scouts in doing first aid work and other useful scouting work. During tho week scouts have been busy pushing the sal' of tho demonstration tickets.

Tho ncwly-iormod Cycling Corps will meet to-night in the Young Men’s Christian Association Rooms, when instruction will bo given in knotting, first aid, signalling, and location work. Last week’s in striiction included first aid work, drill, and other useful work. There is still room for lads from fourteen to seventeen years of age who desiro to take up this branch of the work.

The electrical engineering section of the Eavcnsbourne Scouts, in charge of Air S. Hicks, is doing good work, and great interest is displayed both by the instructor and scouts. It is the intention of this class to connect a telephone and signalling circuit from Havens bourne to their barracks at Bignal Hill, and Mr Hioks has promised later on to instal a wireless sta tion at the barracks. The scouts are fortunate in securing the services of Mrs Hicks to instruct the ambulance section.

The fortnightly meeting of the officers of the Mosgiel Boy Scouts was held at the residence of Corporal D. Findlay on Thursday night last, and attended by eleven officers. The work of the evening consisted in Morse and semaphore signalling and a general discussion on the scout laws. This proved very instructive, in view of the fact that examinations will he held shortly and new officers appointed. Or. Friday night a battalion parade was held. The principal business of the evening was the presenting of a chaplain’s commission to the Rev. Mr Jas. Aitken. In the unavoidable absence of District Commander Jones, Chief Scoutmaster Smollie presented the commission, and Mr Aitken, in returning thanks, expressed his gratifica lion becoming a member of the scouts, and hoped that his connection with them would be one of pleasure to all. One member was sworn in during the evening, all the- officers taking part in the ceremony. There is still room for a_ few more, and any boy wishing to join is assured a hearty; welcome.
