BOWLING

THE CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT. A meeting of the Dunedin Centro of tho New Zealand Bowling Association, called to protest against tho action of the Council in refusing to pass the programme for a Christmas tournament, was held last night, Mr C. E. Keast presiding.

Mr Hogg moved—“ That owing to the decision ot the Council, this Centre abandon the Christmas tournament.” As delegates were aware, it was decided that a Christmas tournament and an Easter tournament should be held, and the programme for tho Christmas tournament was submitted to tho Council. Tho Council carried a motion stating that they thought it inadvisable that two tournaments should be held in one year. A deputation wailed on the Council and asked them to reconsider their decision, but the same answer was given again. Ho would not go into tho question whether it was advisable to hold a Christmas tournament or not. The question was whether or not tho Council’s ruling was to be accepted. In his opinion tho Centro mast accept tho rilling, as the Council were acting in accordance with the constitution. If the constitution wero upset, it would bo possible for Invercargill and Christchurch to put their heads together, and tho ultimate result might be the removing of the New Zealand Bowling Association from Dunedin to Wellington. Let thorn have amalgamation, but not in that way. Mr Lindsay seconded the motion. Mr Til burn shid that ho was only a representative of a country club, but the bowlers lie represented wore not in favor of tho abandonment of the tournament. Mr C. R. Smith s:iid that there soemed to him to he absolutely no object in tho motion. It was known that if the Council did not pass tho programme for the Christmas tournament the tournament could not be held under the auspices of the Centre. That was evident. Mr Ewing thought tho object of bringing forward such a motion was in comprehensive. He supposed it would be competent to pass a motion of protest afterwards. Mr Dempster moved as au amendment—- “ That the action of the Centre in endeavoring to promote a Christmas tournament bo confirmed.” Mr W. Begg ; Do you intend to accept that as an amendment? Tho Chairman ; I do. Mr Begg : Aro you justified in doing 60? Mr Stephens pointed oat that the motion referred to the future and tho amendment to the past. Tho amendment was seconded pro forma by Mr Begg. The mover of the motion having replied, the Chairman said that he would not be a party to bolding the tournament if tho programme were not passed by tho Council. But tho Council gave no reasons for refusing to pass the programme, and a former Christinas tournament had been a great success. He thought that tho decision of the Council was not in the beet interests of bowling. The voting was (is follows For the amendment, 15; against, 11.—Amendment' carried.

Mr Stephens was proceeding to move an-

Mr Ewing : I take it that the motion passed to-night will be forwarded to the Association, and that the matter will then drop ?, The Chairman : Yes; as far as I am concerned. Mr Hogg said that this put him m rather a false position, as he did not know that tfeat would bo the outcome of the amendment.
