[Pek Unitkd Pkess Association.] WELLINGTON, October 23.William Ham was charged at the Police Court to-day with making a liet in Willis street. The defendant, a, bookmaker, pleaded not. guilty. '1 he case broke, down because a deaf witness declined to bear out a statement which, it was stated he had made to a detective, that ho had made a. £5 bet with defendant -on the Avondale races. Samuel Isaacs, n. bookmaker, was convicted in the Magistrate's Court to-day of street betting on" the. \"ew Zealand Cup, ami betting tote odds. Fines aggregating £SO were implied.
