ALBION CRICKET CLUB

From tlie forty-eighth annual report of ths above we make the following extracts ; The past season has been a record one in many respects, and the Committee heartily congratulate the members upon one of the most successful seasons experienced in the history of the club. The chief factors in the success of the season may be attributed to good generalship and assiduous practice. The winter practices have no doubt been instrumental in bringing to the front many of the young players of the club. The very fact of six trophies being secured by “winter practice” members fully demonstrates the undoubted benefit derived from this source. The Committee feel that they cannot sufficiently express their appreciation of Mr Ritchie, who again generously accorded the club his gram store for winter practice. Tiro senior eleven, for the second time in their lengthened existence, have attained tire distinction of securing the championship of Otago. In all seven matches were played. Of this number the club won six, the remaining match being lost on the first innings to the Opoho Club. Throughout the season the members showed very consistent form in all departments of the game, the fielding showing a marked improvement, the result being that tills eleven also won the 0.0.A. fielding trophy. The Committee feel that the success of the senior eleven is partly due to the excellent judgment of the captain, C. Wordsworth, who throughout the season handled the team in a manner that inspired confidence and keenness in the players. S. Etiddlestone won the batting trophy, With an average of 32.5, with T. MTarlane a close second with 27.8. C. Corbett proved himself once mors an able trundler, and deservedly won the trophy, with an average of 8.8. In all this player secured twenty-five wickets for 221 runs. The Committee entered five teams in their respective grades—namely, ono senior, one second grade, two third grades, and one fourth grade—and would suggest to the incoming Committee (owing to the limited number of wickets available) the desirability of in future nominating only four teams. Notwithstanding the many losses by reason of removal, the club still claim to have' the largest membership (90). On several occasions the Committee found themselves in a financial difficulty, owing chiefly to having to meet a Corporation account of £2O, proportion of cost of new fence, and also the laxity of several members to pay their subscriptions. It is felt that the time has arrived for raising the amount of tiie subscription. This increase is absolutely necessary, considering the amount of money that is required for material, the upkeep of the turf ■wickets and ground. A proposal in this direction will he submitted at the annual meeting. The Committee materially assisted ths O.C.A. in sending a representative team to Auckland by donating £l3 odd toward* the subscription-list initiated by the_ ‘ Evening Star ’ Company, this amount being hall the gate money of the Carishrook B match. The presentation of trophies won during the season took place in the Waratah Tea Rooms on April 14. The function proved one of the most successful the club have had. This was no doubt due to the senior elevens’success. Veterans were present in good numbers, also representatives from other clubs. During the evening some very interesting reminiscences were given by'several original members of the-dub.
