The ‘Daily Mail’ states that Earl troy’s term of office os Governor-General of Canada will be extended for a j,’car. Mr J. W. Joynt will leave Wellington for London .on the 26th inst. to take up the work of the New Zealand University in succession to Mr H. W'. Eve, who has retired. Professor Bickerton, accompanied by Miss Bickerton, left Lyttelton on Thursday by the Ulimaroa for Sydney, where he will join a steamer for England. His visit is made for the purpose of placing before Home scientists his theory of cosmic impact with a view to securing its acceptance. An Auckland wire reports the death of .Mr Richard Hobbs, ex-member for Auckland City, and a son of Mr John Hobbs, one of the earliest Wesleyan missionaries. 'The deceased had been in indifferent health lately, but was about town yesterday. His housekeeper heard a noise in his bedroom this morning, and found him lying on the floor face downwards, dead. Dr Ernest Howdeu, who has been practising at Wnikouaiti, leaves on Monday for Cambridge, where he has purchased a practice. Mr J. Lindsay Weir, solicitor, who is leaving Dunedin to commence the practice of his profession on his own account at Klthajn, was this morning met by the staff of Messrs Hosking and Cook, solicitors, and presented with a case of pipes, as A a token of the esteem in which he is held. -Mr Lemon, on behalf of the staff, referred in a few well chosen words to Mr Weir’s long connection with the firm, and to his ability for the profession, in which he had already shown grc.it promise. Inspector Gillies, who has been too ill‘ to attend to his duties for some weeks past, is now reported to be greatly improved in health.—Christchurch telegram.
